Guatemala 2017: Clinical Days

On day one, dentist, Dr. Keiko Wada and her dental assistant, Ashley Florek, were greeted by the clinical director, Dr. Stephanie Lambour and the clinic’s full time dentist, Dr. Rodiguez  They were greeted with a warm welcome back and a dental chair to work from for the rest of the week!

The waiting room was full of local Guatemalans of all ages in need of dental treatment. Following a quick set up, Dr. Wada and Ashley started treating scheduled patients.  Being Dr. Wada’s 3rd visit to the Peronia clinic, she developed the reputation for restoring badly broken down front teeth. The entire day was spent giving patient’s back beautiful smiles.

As the days progressed, more patient’s were seen by Dr. Wada for tooth colored restorations, extractions and cleanings.  The Clinic provides the opportunity for people to receive quality treatment for nominal fee, but the demand for needed treatment is so high the clinic becomes inundated with work. It is for this reason, being able to contribute time to treat these patients and assist the local staff, is enriching.

The biggest gift, is to share time, knowledge and experience as professionals in the United States to those that have the desire to learn and treat patients with the same desire in Guatemala.  To contribute to the grassroots of a developing dental clinic in an impoverished community to become self sustained is the ultimate reward for those that have been a part of this dream.
